Tanto en los procesos revolucionarios de Túnez como de Egipto la mayoría de los medios informativos sólo destacan el papel de la juventud y las clases medias que utilizan Internet y las redes sociales como actores privilegiados de las protestas.
Estas opiniones parcializan la realidad y ocultan el papel de los trabajadores que fue decisivo en Túnez para la caída de Ben Alí y parece haberle dado el empujón final a Mubarak en Egipto.
En el primer caso fueron fundamentales las huelgas apoyadas por la federación sindical semiindependiente Unión General de Trabajadores de Túnez -UGTT- cuando ya en los últimos días de diciembre los trabajadores se habían sumado a las protestas provocadas a partir de la inmolación de Mohamed Bouazizi -licenciado sin trabajo forzado a sobrevivir como vendedor ambulante de frutas y hortalizas- el 17 del mismo mes. Incluso si la dirigencia sindical colaboraba con el régimen, sus miembros eran sindicalistas militantes lo que posibilitó que llegada la hora de las huelgas, los sindicatos pudieran sumarse.
El movimiento obrero egipcio
En un artículo publicado por Página 12 de Argentina, el intelectual marxista Samir Amín, para quien el movimiento tiene como sus componentes fundamentales a la juventud estudiantil urbana, apoyada por segmentos de las clases medias educadas, demócratas, “las cosas podrían cambiar si la clase obrera y los movimientos campesinos entran en escena. Pero por ahora tal cosa no parece estar en la agenda”.
Sin embargo, a partir del domingo 6 de febrero con la vuelta al trabajo fomentada por el propio gobierno, la situación dio un giro con la entrada masiva del proletariado egipcio en la escena. En una ciudad tras otra hubo huelgas y ocupaciones de fábricas.
Según informó Ahram Online las protestas laborales se intensificaron en Suez con la participación de los trabajadores textiles en una manifestación junto a otros 2.000 que exigían su derecho al trabajo. En la misma ciudad alrededor de 2.000 jóvenes se manifestaron para reclamar trabajo.
En Mahalla, más de 1.500 trabajadores de la empresa Abu El-Subaa se manifestaron, cortando la carretera, para exigir el pago de sus salarios, y declararon que no es la primera vez. Los trabajadores han protagonizado repetidas sentadas durante dos años, para exigir sus derechos.
Desde diciembre de 2006 se viven las mayores y más sostenidas olas de acciones huelguísticas desde 1946, detonadas por huelgas en la industria textil en la ciudad de Mahalla en el Delta del Nilo, centro de la mayor fuerza laboral en Medio Oriente con más de 28.000 trabajadores. Comenzó por temas laborales pero se extendió a todos los sectores de la sociedad con la excepción de la policía y las fuerzas armadas. Hubo manifestaciones que reunieron más de 10.000 trabajadores.
La segunda huelga de Mahalla de septiembre de 2007 duró seis días. La huelga de Kafr al-Dawwar en febrero de 2007 también duró varios días, y una huelga de trabajadores en la empresa textil de Abu-Makaram, en la ciudad de Sadat, duró 3 semanas (54 dólares mensuales era el salario de los trabajadores textiles en lucha). Contra los sindicatos paraestatales se creó en ese momento la Liga de Trabajadores Textiles, organizada por los líderes de la huelga de Mahalla. Esas luchas fueron mostrando un movimiento obrero fuerte, combativo y estructurado, aunque no a nivel nacional. En 2006 se produjeron 227 huelgas en todo el país; en 2007 se elevó la combatividad hasta llegar a las 580.
En abril de 2008 hubo una huelga general convocada por los sindicatos contra el alza del pan, del costo de vida y por aumentos de salarios frente a la llamada “crisis del pan”, producida por el alza internacional de los alimentos, provocada por la especulación desatada con la crisis mundial iniciada en los EE.UU. en 2007. Algo inédito desde los años 40. En esta oportunidad irrumpen por primera vez los jóvenes de Facebook y de Twiter en solidaridad con los trabajadores y sus reivindicaciones, los llamados “Jóvenes del 6 de abril”.
En los 3 primeros meses de 2008 se realizaron 389 huelgas y protestas.
Como resultado de esas huelgas se lograron obtener 2 sindicatos independientes, los primeros de su clase desde 1957, el de los cobradores de contribuciones de bienes raíces, que incluye a más de 40.000 empleados públicos y el de los técnicos de la salud, más de 30.000.
Como vemos muy lejos de ser un actor ausente, el movimiento de los trabajadores en Egipto ha sido decisivo en la caída de los dictadores Mubarak.
