Un nuevo informe publicado por la Campaña Ropa Limpia, ‘Europe´s Sweatshops‘, denuncia los endémicos salarios de pobreza y otras duras condiciones de trabajo de la industria de la confección y el calzado en Europa oriental y sudoriental. En Ucrania, por ejemplo, la gran mayoría de trabajadores y trabajadoras gana 89 euros al mes a pesar de trabajar horas extra en un país donde el salario debería ser cinco veces superior. Entre las marcas clientes de estas fábricas están Benetton, Esprit, GEOX, Triumph y Vera Moda.

Para las marcas internacionales de moda, la región del este y sudeste de Europa es un paraíso para los salarios bajos. Muchas de estas compañías, además, se vanaglorian del ‘Made in Europe’ para hacer creer a las personas consumidoras, que los productos están realizados bajo unas condiciones justas, cuando en realidad una gran parte de los 1,7 millones de trabajadores y trabajadoras de la confección de estos países viven en situación de pobreza y se enfrentan a condiciones de trabajo peligrosas, incluidas horas extra forzosas, y acumulan elevadas deudas.
