Un semanario de Portugal denuncia que una empresa subcontratada por Zara explota a niños

LISBOA.- La empresa española Inditex, propietaria de la marca Zara, dice que investigará la supuesta utilización de niños para coser sus zapatos por una fábrica subcontratada en Portugal, según publica el semanario luso ‘Expresso’.

La mencionada revista, que sale los sábados, publica un reportaje sobre el trabajo infantil en Portugal centrado en Carlitos y Miguel, dos niños de 11 y 14 años respectivamente, que cosen en el interior de sus casas zapatos de la marca Zara.

Residen en la zona rural de Felgueiras, en el norte de Portugal, una región muy deprimida, en la que antes había fábricas textiles y de calzado que acabaron cerrando.

«Carlitos, 11 años: 0,20 € por zapato», titula la portada del suplemento ‘Única’, del semanario ‘Expresso’, que incluye el reportaje. En la información, Carlitos cuenta que por cada par que cosen les pagan 40 céntimos, así que, si cosen 50 pares, les darán 20 euros.

Un par de zapatos como el que él cose cuesta 40 euros en una tienda de Oporto, señala la publicación, que destaca que este domingo es el Día Mundial del Niño.

Las páginas interiores muestran imágenes de los niños cosiendo zapatos con el sello de la mencionada marca y con las manos protegidas por gruesos dedales de cuero.

El semanario ‘Expresso’, en una información adicional al reportaje deja hablar a Inditex sobre el caso denunciado. La empresa española explica a la revista que consiguió averiguar que los zapatos son producidos en una fábrica subcontratada en la región norte del país y que en una auditoría realizada el año pasado a esta empresa no se observó nada sobre explotación infantil.

«Éste es un caso gravísimo. Tenemos un código de conducta muy rígido, que prohíbe el trabajo infantil en nuestras empresas externas», declaran a la publicación responsables del gabinete de comunicación de Inditex. «Vamos a confirmarlo primero, pero, si es verdad, Inditex será implacable. Esa fábrica dejará de trabajar para nuestro grupo», asegura la fuente.

El dirigente del Sindicato de Calzado luso, José Guimaraes, explicó que los zapatos son distribuidos en furgonetas por intermediarios por las casas de la región.

«Al final del día, la furgoneta va a recoger la obra ya cosida y entrega más zapatos para coser», dijo Guimaraes, y señaló que una familia puede coser en un día entre 100 y 150 zapatos, por lo que reciben entre 20 y 30 euros.

El sindicalista consideró que esta cantidad es «miserable», pero que en muchas ocasiones éste es el único dinero que entra en las casas.

En 2002, la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT) denunció que en España podía haber 200.000 trabajadores menores de 14 años, «muchos de los cuales trabajan en pequeñas empresas en condiciones de subcontratación, especialmente en la industria del calzado».

El gabinete de comunicación de Inditex informó que en el último año dejaron de trabajar para la compañía española cerca de 400 empresas por «violar el código de conducta de Inditex sobre trabajo infantil, libertad de asociación, salud, seguridad o medioambiente».

Inditex se incorporó en octubre de 2005 a la Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), organización que agrupa a compañías internacionales de distribución, grandes proveedores, sindicatos y ONGs, con el objetivo de mejorar las condiciones de vida de los trabajadores de las empresas proveedoras.

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said «You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.» She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
