Este 8 de marzo, con ellas en el recuerdo, trabajadoras textiles de Bangladesh saldrán a la calle para exigir el fin de las condiciones precarias que, cinco años después, siguen sufriendo.

«Este jueves marcharemos en una gran manifestación contra el acoso en las fábricas, la discriminación y para reclamar un salario digno», explica en una conversación telefónica Nazma Akter, una de las principales líderes sindicales del país y presidenta de Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation, que defiende los derechos de miles de mujeres.

En Gurgaon, al norte de India, un grupo de empleadas convocadas por el colectivo Nari Shakti Manch, que agrupa a trabajadoras de la confección y del hogar, han organizado una manifestación contra la práctica del trabajo con contrato –una forma de empleo indirecto en la que no son contratadas por la fábrica– y para exigir un salario mínimo, demandas que presentarán al finalizar la protesta en la Comisaría de Trabajo.

«Quieren atraer la atención de la industria y las marcas para regular esta práctica, porque a las mujeres se les niega el derecho a recibir un salario mínimo por largas horas de trabajo y a ser contratadas como empleadas regulares», señala la Society for Labour and Development, con sede en Nueva Delhi.

De acuerdo con el estudio, trabajan como media 60 horas a la semana y ganan alrededor de 0,95 dólares la hora. «Hay pruebas significativas de que cuanto más trabajaban, menos ganaban», señalan los autores del estudio, en el que han participado más de 500 empleadas de los tres países.

Además, casi la mitad de las trabajadoras de la industria bangladesí entrevistadas reconoce haber sido humillada ante sus compañeros en el último año. Los insultos, las amenazas, los empujones y, en algunos casos, los golpes, son también parte del día a día. También la discriminación por razón de edad y por el hecho de ser mujer.

Cinco años después de la tragedia del edificio de Rana Plaza, que conmocionó a la opinión pública mundial, ha aumentado la presión sobre los fabricantes, pero las mujeres aún no se sienten seguras en sus centros de trabajo. En el informe, la mayoría denuncia que sus fábricas carecen de equipos de seguridad básicos y solo la mitad asegura que cuentan con sistemas de detección de incendios.

Es el caso de Yeasmin, de 31 años, que vive en Gazipur, al norte de Dacca. En octubre de 2016 hubo un incendio en el taller donde trabajaba. Aunque cambió de fábrica, aún teme sufrir un accidente. «Nunca he sentido seguridad, hay mucho peligro. Siempre da miedo trabajar aquí, quién sabe qué puede pasar», dice en un testimonio recogido por el informe.

Como muchas trabajadoras en Bangladesh, Yeasmin entrega la mayor parte de su sueldo a su esposo. Fuera del trabajo, los hombres suelen controlar el dinero ganado por ellas, lo que impide su independencia económica. La mayoría se ve forzada a pedir préstamos para comprar los bienes más básicos. En el momento de la entrevista, Yeasmin, que vive agobiada por las deudas, tuvo que hacer un pago de cuatro veces su salario mensual.

Además, también se enfrentan a un entorno laboral que suele provocarles estrés. El 77% de las empleadas asegura que no se sienten seguras en los talleres y casi la mitad ha presenciado un incendio. A menudo relatan que sus jefes les gritan cuando creen que están trabajando muy lentas o están cometiendo errores.

«No me sentía bien, pero él me forzó a trabajar más rápido. Casi me desmayo, no tenía energía ni para hablar. Después me puse a llorar, estaba enfadada, pero no podía hacer nada», dice una de las jóvenes entrevistadas. Asimismo, es frecuente la discriminación contra mujeres que se quedan embarazadas o las que deciden unirse a un sindicato.

En Bangalore, India, el informe concluye que las condiciones laborales son mejores si se comparan con los otros países, pero las mujeres también sufren abusos verbales «desenfrenados» por parte de sus supervisores, como los insultos y las humillaciones. «Sus largas horas de trabajo tras las máquinas de coser provocan un dolor constante, y luchan por conseguir tiempo libre para cuidar de sí mismas y de sus familias», añaden.

También, las trabajadoras de India dependen en gran medida de los ingresos de sus maridos. «Teníamos problemas económicos. El sueldo de mi esposo no era suficiente y teníamos que pagar el colegio de nuestros hijos, así que comencé a trabajar en la industria textil», explica Rathna, de 32 años.
