Este estudio es considerado como el más importante de los últimos años sobre las condiciones laborales de estas empleadas, encargadas de dar los retoques finales a las prendas — abotonados, bordados o abalorios — que terminan «en las perchas de las principales marcas de moda occidentales», según el director del estudio ‘Prendas Manchadas’, Siddaharh Kara.
«El objetivo de este estudio es el de revelar las condiciones en las que trabajan estas empleadas con la esperanza de que los gobiernos, las compañías y las ONG puedan coordinar una solución a esta explotación laboral», ha explicado Kara.
Las costureras que trabajan en su domicilio son un sector invisible que permanece ajeno a los «razonables esfuerzos», según el estudio, «que efectúan las marcas en India porque estamos hablando de personas subcontratadas», fuera de las nóminas o bien residentes en campamentos laborales situados en el perímetro de las gigantescas factorías textiles del país.
El estudio se cimenta en tres porcentajes abrumadores. Un 99,3 por ciento de las empleadas son musulmanas o bien pertenecen a una casta inferior (eso si pertenecen a una); un 99,2 trabajan bajo condiciones de trabajo forzado, por debajo del salario mínimo estipulado, y un 95,5 por ciento son mujeres. Una de cada cinco mujeres son menores de 17 años y entre las 1.452 entrevistadas para el informe había incluso niñas menores de 10 años. Casi un 6 por ciento de las encuestadas estaban trabajando para pagar una deuda.
