Ayúdanos a investigar el impacto socioambiental de nuestro frenético consumo de ropa

INFORMACIÓN GENERAL

La industria de la ropa ha sido considerada la segunda más contaminante del mundo, sólo por detrás de los combustibles fósiles. Y aunque esta afirmación ha sido cuestionada –la sostenibilidad es muy compleja y es casi imposible hacer rankings de ese tipo–, el impacto de nuestra manera de consumir ropa es innegable.

¿Has ido alguna vez a una tienda a comprar un vestido que habías visto días antes y ya no estaba? ¿Cuánto te ha durado la camiseta que te compraste el año pasado? ¿Cuánta ropa tiras cada temporada?

¿Y te has preguntado alguna vez dónde acaba todo eso? ¿O cuál es el impacto de producir ropa a esas velocidades?

Sólo algunos datos que ponen de manifiesto el impacto de nuestro frenético consumo de moda:

  • Supone hasta el 10% de las emisiones globales.
  • Las previsiones, según la Global Fashion Agenda, es que si no se continúa los esfuerzos por cambiar la industria, se perderá el 50% de los objetivos de reducciones de emisiones para 2030, sin alcanzar los objetivos climáticos del Acuerdo de París (2015) y del Informe del Panel Intergubernamental del Cambio Climático (IPPC) de 2018, que aconseja no superar 1,5º C grados.
  • Actualmente, las emisiones de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI) de la producción textil global superan las de todos los vuelos internacionales y tráfico marítimo combinados.
  • De 2000 a 2015, la producción de ropa se ha duplicado en el mundo hasta superar los 100.000 millones de prendas anuales. Algunos informes indican que en 2010 se produjeron 150.000 millones.
  • En la actualidad el/la ciudadan@ medi@ compra un 60% más de ropa que hace 15 años.
  • Al mismo tiempo, se ha reducido su uso: hoy más del 30% de la ropa que puebla los armarios europeos no se han usado en, al menos, un año.
  • Globalmente, los clientes pierden un valor de 460.000 millones de dólares cada año al desechar ropa que podrían seguir usando.
  • Se estima que algunas prendas se desechan tras sólo siete o diez usos.
  • La moda es la segunda industria más demandante de agua, y genera alrededor del 20% de las aguas residuales del mundo, liberando anualmente medio millón de microfibras al océano.

Pero el impacto no se limita a ríos contaminados y vertederos desbordados de residuos textiles. A lo largo de toda la cadena, desde los cultivos y la extracción de materias primas, hasta los innumerables deshechos, pasando por la confección, los acabados, el transporte de ropa, su distribución, venta y uso, la contaminación que deja la industria de la moda afecta a millones de personas. Pero apenas se habla de ello.

Nos han contado el sudor vertido por las manos que confeccionan nuestra ropa: condiciones muy precarias, explotación, abusos, jornadas extenuantes y salarios que no les permiten una vida digna que mayoritariamente afectan a mujeres, que suponen entre el 80% o el 90% de las trabajadoras de los talleres y maquilas textiles.

No son las únicas. Después de nuestros proyectos sobre la industria del azúcar y del aceite de palma, en Carro de Combate lanzamos una nueva investigación en la que queremos entender mejor qué hay detrás de la industria de la moda y cuáles son esas voces invisibilizadas que apenas escuchamos, pero que también son #fashionvictims.

Ha llegado el momento de ser cool de verdad y profundizar en el lado más opaco de esta industria supuestamente tan fashion. Ayúdanos a investigar. Súbete al carro.

Descripción del proyecto. Características, fortalezas y diferenciales.

Como en proyecto anteriores realizados por el equipo de Carro de Combate, analizaremos la industria de la moda a través de reportajes que serán publicados en abierto, y con licencia Creative Commons, en nuestra web. Además, reuniremos el material en un ebook para facilitar la lectura.

Además, si conseguimos llegar al mínimo, comenzaremos a recaudar fondos para profundizar en la cadena de producción de esta industria y analizar en mayor profundidad las materias primas más populares.

PRIMERA FASE DEL PROYECTO: IMPACTOS SOCIOAMBIENTALES DE LA INDUSTRIA DE LA MODA
Como ya hemos apuntado, queremos centrarnos en los impactos socioambientales menos conocidos del siempre creciente consumo de moda. Algunos de los aspectos en los que nos centraremos:

  • ¿Cuál es el impacto socioambiental de la producción de ropa en los países de origen? ¿Qué supone para las comunidades la instalación de la industria textil en la zona?
  • ¿Cuántos kilómetros recorren las prendas hasta que llega a nuestras manos?
  • ¿Cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí? ¿Quién se beneficia? ¿Qué empresas son las más contaminantes?
  • Greenwashing, socialwashing y feminiwashing textil: ¿Qué hay detrás de las promesas de la industria de la moda sobre sostenibilidad?
  • ¿Qué impacto tiene sobre las trabajadoras la exposición a las sustancias y procesos utilizados por la industria?
  • ¿Qué alternativas proponen cambiar el actual sistema de producción y distribución sector?
  • ¿Qué va a suponer el cierre de tiendas y el auge del e-commerce tras la pandemia de la Covid19?

Para documentar el proyecto, nos desplazaremos a algunos de los principales centros de producción de textil, tal y como hemos hecho en proyectos anteriores. Sin embargo, con motivo de la pandemia mundial ocasionada por la COVID19, adaptaremos las localizaciones y el calendario de trabajo a las condiciones de movilidad internacional y de costes, debido a las enormes fluctuaciones actuales. Nuestra intención, siempre que sea posible, es viajar a los siguientes centros de producción:

  • Bangladesh
  • Marruecos
  • Argentina
  • España

SEGUNDA FASE DEL PROYECTO: EL ORIGEN DE LA CADENA – LAS MATERIAS PRIMAS

Si conseguimos llegar al presupuesto mínimo, profundizaremos aún más en la cadena para investigar la primera etapa de la industria: las materias primas. ¿Sabes qué materiales son los más utilizados por la industria? Y de ellos, ¿cuáles tienen mayores impactos socioambientales? ¿cómo se produce la viscosa o el poliéster? ¿o qué hay detrás de los nuevos tejidos que prometen sostenibilidad? ¿y qué sustancias potencialmente nocivas para la salud humana y el medio ambiente se suelen utilizar en la producción de cada tipo de tejido?

Si llegamos al óptimo en el crowdfunding, responderemos a todas éstas y muchas otras cuestiones que tengáis sobre las materias primas de las prendas y complementos de moda que tenemos en nuestros armarios.

Motivación y a quién va dirigido el proyecto

En Carro de Combate llevamos más de ocho años investigando el origen de lo que consumimos cada día para arrojar luz sobre los impactos socioambientales asociados al modelo de producción imperante hoy en día. Desde el inicio de la cadena, con la extracción de materias primas, a la distribución y los impactos en nuestra salud, las periodistas de Carro de Combate viajan a los principales puntos de producción y entrevista a los principales actores implicados en cada industria. Lo hacemos de forma independiente para no tener que someternos a los intereses de los poderes económicos y políticos, como ocurre en muchos medios.

Al igual que el resto de informaciones publicadas por Carro de Combate, el proyecto #ModaBasura va dirigido a los y las ciudadanas que quieren entender mejor qué hay detrás de sus decisiones de compra y qué pueden hacer desde su posición como consumidorxs para evitar sus impactos y cambiar el modelo. La finalidad es sensibilizar en torno a los impactos socioambientales de la industria textil, a fin de evidenciar la necesidad de cambios estructurales en el sector, que vayan más allá de los cambios individuales y aborden las problemáticas sistémicas.

Porque el consumo es una de las principales herramientas que lxs ciudadanxs tienen a su disposición para expresar en qué tipo de sociedad quieren vivir; un acto político diario. Y si el consumo es un acto político, entonces, la primera batalla es la de la información.

Experiencia previa y equipo

Carro de Combate es un proyecto periodístico que investiga sobre el origen de los productos y las condiciones laborales en las que son fabricados, a fin de visibilizar los impactos sociales y ambientales de las mercancías que consumimos, así como indagar en las alternativas al alcance de un consumidor crítico y solidario.

Comenzamos nuestra andadura en 2012 y desde entonces mantiene activa su página web www.carrodecombate.com y hemos publicado varios libros:

  • Amarga Dulzura. Una historia sobre el origen del azúcar (autoedición, 2013), en el que se repasa la cadena de producción de la industria del azúcar
  • Carro de Combate. Consumir es un acto político (Clave Intelectual, 2014), en el que se analiza los procesos productivos de 20 productos de consumo cotidiano
  • Uno de dos. El aceite de palma en tu vida diaria (Autoedición, 2017), en el que investigamos la industria del aceite de palma
  • Los Monocultivos que conquistaron el Mundo (Akal, 2019). Las investigaciones en profundidad en torno a las industrias de la palma aceitera y la soja fueron financiadas en sendas campañas en Goteo.org.

El equipo de Carro de Combate está formado por un grupo de periodistas con una amplia experiencia en periodismo de investigación y cuestiones relacionadas con la crisis ecológica y el consumo crítico y consciente, que informa sobre cadenas de producción en varios puntos del planeta:
